• What to pack for a 2 week trip. What to take with you on a trip: a checklist, my recommendations and advice. When is a roulette cable useful?

    29.08.2023

    When going on vacation, it is very important to properly treat the fees - to put things in such a way that only the most necessary items are in the suitcases, and nothing more. This is especially true for air travel. In order for the fees to pass quickly and efficiently, it is best to make a list of what to take with you on a trip in advance. Over time, it can be supplemented, gradually crossing out what has already been prepared.

    Those who like to spend holidays away from home can make such a list once. After the first trip, correct it, taking into account what was taken, but not needed, or enter the missing items.

    Money and documents

    Of course, you cannot do without these two things on any trip, even if you go on vacation to relatives in the nearest village. And if you fly by plane or travel by train for a long period of time, documents and money on the trip will come in handy.

    List of required documents:

    • A foreign passport (if you are crossing the border) and a civil passport if you are traveling through the territory of Russia. It is advisable to make photocopies of passports in case they are lost;
    • Put travel documents in your passport - train, plane or bus tickets. Scan them and identify them in one of the folders on your gadget;
    • If you decide to spend your vacation in a resort, be sure to grab a voucher for the hotel where you decide to stay;
    • For sanatoriums and health resorts, you will need a medical card;
    • Those who have health insurance will need to bring a photocopy of it with them. If there is none, and the trip is long, be sure to issue it;
    • A driver's license if you are traveling by car and an international driver's license if you plan to rent a car abroad.

    Important! Please note that when traveling abroad, you can get into unforeseen and non-standard situations. Therefore, among your loved ones staying at home, there must be a trusted person who can resolve problems with local authorities. Even a lost SIM card from a mobile phone cannot be restored without a notarized power of attorney.

    Divide funds according to the following principle:

    • A small amount of cash, which may be needed at the airport, at the railway station or on the train itself;
    • Be sure not one, but several bank cards. It is better if they are from different banks and support different payment systems - MasterCard or Visa. Before leaving, pay attention to their expiration dates;

    If the vacation is related to crossing the border, grab a small amount of currency and open at least one foreign currency account in the bank.

    Do not forget that before going abroad, you need to report this to the nearest bank branch where a foreign currency account is opened. Otherwise, you will not withdraw money from an ATM of another state!

    Engineering and electronics

    Be sure to take a mobile phone on the road, even if the “roaming” service is not issued for you. You may need it to inform your relatives in case an unforeseen situation arises at the airport or railway station and you need their help. Also pack your charger.

    A tablet or laptop, if necessary, is checked in at the airport as hand luggage. The same applies to a camera or camcorder. Do not forget to take chargers with all devices. Bring a flash drive to your laptop or tablet.

    Clothing and footwear

    The list of things you need to take with you on the road depends on the time of year, the country you are going to, and, of course, how exactly you are going to spend your time. Tourist routes with a backpack on your shoulders and a beach holiday in a luxury hotel on the seashore will require completely different equipment from you.

    The clothes that you plan to take on a trip should not be a lot. List only the essentials:

    • You do not need to take warm clothes to the countries of Asia and the South East. A few pairs of T-shirts, shorts, bathing suits and sun hats are all you need in Vietnam, China, Thailand or Bali. Shoes are slates and a pair of sneakers for tourist and sightseeing trips;
    • In European countries, you can expect various natural disasters. You need to prepare for them. Be sure to bring raincoats and umbrellas if you are traveling to the UK, Finland or Switzerland;
    • On the shores of the Mediterranean, 2-3 bathing suits, a small amount of summer shoes and clothes will be appropriate.

    When making a list for a trip, be guided by the place of residence. If there is an opportunity to do laundry at a camp site or in a rest home, and in hotels to give things to the laundry, do not take a lot of them.

    Hygiene items and first aid kit

    Going to rest in resorts in the summer, be sure to add sunscreens and lotions, insect repellents, sun glasses, and hygienic lipstick to the list of items.

    There should not be a lot of hygiene items if you are going to live where everything you need can be bought. Here is a rough list:

    • Shampoo and hair balm;
    • Dry and wet sanitary napkins;
    • A small bar of soap and roll-on deodorant;
    • Hairdryer, comb;
    • Manicure scissors, nail file.

    Provide a small sewing kit. Its standard version: white, black thread, a pair of needles, a few safety pins.

    Remember that during air travel, the amount of liquids is regulated by the carrier company! It is also forbidden to carry cans of hairspray and deodorant in hand luggage.

    When collecting a first-aid kit, take into account the fact that strong psychotropic drugs and tranquilizers are allowed to be transported by plane only if you have a medical report and a prescription from your doctor (in your last name).

    Starting to pack things according to the compiled list of what is needed on the trip, immediately divide them into those that will fly in the luggage compartment and those that will be issued as hand luggage. Try not to pack a lot of clothes and shoes! Remember that for every extra kilo at the airport you will have to pay extra!

    Trips are long sitting in trains, planes or buses, passing customs control and paperwork, running around the streets in search of housing and long walks. Of course, you should think about what you will do during an independent trip: outdoor activities, cultural events, official meetings, parties, visiting a chic restaurant, and so on.

    Our family often travels and we have learned by trial and error how to pack a backpack so that later we do not regret the extra pounds behind our backs. We have an unspoken rule: the weight of luggage for the whole family, and these are two adults and a child, should not exceed 20kg. In this article, we will provide a list of things that we take with us on trips, regardless of whether the trip is long or short. We will also talk about some life hacks and give advice on how best to pack and not forget anything before the trip.

    Travel preparation

    No matter how experienced a traveler you are, do not leave everything to the last day - start preparing for the trip in advance. After all, it is very important to think over the contents of the suitcase in advance. As a rule, among the things thrown in a hurry there is a lot of unnecessary, and the most necessary is just not enough. If the trip is not planned for a week, but for a much longer period (for example, wintering in warm countries for 3 months or more), then it is better to do everything in advance: developing a route, applying for visas, booking accommodation, studying information about the country (prices, food, transport, and so on), buying currency and dealing with bank cards - all this will take enough time.

    Note: We recommend that you make a list of things for a trip in advance and write it down within a few days. So, you have every chance not to miss anything. The Packing Planner application will help you with this - it reminds you of what was planned for the trip according to the written list, also use Evernote - an electronic notepad. Once compiled, the list can then be used repeatedly, taking it as a basis, only minor details will change.

    What to take on the road?

    Money, documents, cards

    The first and most important thing to take with you on a trip is documents and money. It is better to have a small waist bag, it is popularly known as a “bananka”, or a body waist bag that you will always carry with you and take in your hand luggage when flying.

    In our family, as an example, we use such a “banana”;)
    And here is such a body bag for clothes, where we hide the most valuable things: passports and currency;)

    So, what to take with you on a trip:

    1. Passports and their copies. In general, keep copies of all documents on your phone, flash drive, cloud storage / virtual disk or email - but it’s better to play it safe and choose several options at once. We keep an electronic copy in Dropbox (make sure documents are saved offline). These copies may be needed if the originals are lost.

    Note: check if you need a visa, the Doyouneedvisa website will help you with this.

    2. air tickets.

    3. Printouts and electronic versions hotel/apartment bookings.

    4. Printouts and electronic versions insurance. So, you can read our experience about. Do not forget your vaccination certificate if required (for example, some African countries and countries in South America will not be allowed to enter without the original yellow fever vaccination certificate).

    5. Bank cards(it is better to have several cards and accounts of different banks). Inform your banks about the trip and the specific countries you visit so that your bank card is not blocked.

    6. Some cash. Cash should always be at hand - and it is in the currency of the country where you are. For example, during our time we had problems more than once.

    7. Download to your mobile phone or tablet offline maps, for example Maps.Me .

    8. International driver's license and license (power of attorney), as well as car documents, "green card", registration certificate and inspection card, etc. when traveling in your own car.

    first aid kit

    When planning a family trip abroad, you need to keep your health in mind and take care of the travel first aid kit in advance, because anything can happen. And remember that abroad, you simply cannot buy some medicines, as they are not sold without a prescription.

    Life hack: we usually form two first-aid kits (and we advise you), in one - only the most necessary drugs that we carry with us (for example, from allergies for my husband, from blows, bruises, cuts - for my son), in the second - everything else.

    List of medicines that you need to take with you on a trip:

    • Antipyretics
    • Anti-inflammatory/sedatives
    • Anti-infectives
    • Antitussives
    • Ear, throat, nose, eyes
    • Gastrointestinal remedies
    • Antiallergic (antihistamine) drugs
    • Painkillers
    • Disinfectants (dressing material, antiseptic)
    • Means for protecting the skin
    • Anti-repellents
    • Decongestants

    Read more about what kind of drugs we take with us on a trip and how to assemble a family first aid kit - read. If you like the list, you can download for free on the site (on the main page on the right) “First-aid kit checklist of 12 travel essentials”.

    Technique

    Everything is individual here: someone takes nothing but a mobile phone and a selfie stick, and someone stuffs a backpack to the eyeballs with equipment.

    • Laptop if you need it for work
    • Mobile phone and charger for it
    • Camera(preferably a non-bulky DSLR with several large lenses, if you wish, you can replace it with a mobile phone with a good camera if you are not a professional photographer)
    • selfie stick
    • Headphones
    • power bank- an external battery (charger) for any gadget that has a mini-usb connector
    • Adapter for various types of sockets, as well as a tee or a compact extension cord (relevant for those who leave for a long time and take a lot of equipment with them)
    • Notepad and pen
    • Navigator if you go by car + holder

    We also take an external hard drive, flash drive and small speakers. We usually do not buy a SIM card - you can communicate for free via Skype, Viber, WhatsApp and similar applications. And for Kyivstar users, we have an excellent article - read it, use it. The information has been verified more than once;)

    Life hack: for all wires (chargers, USB cords) we have a special bag so that they are not lost - very convenient. We always take all gadgets with a bag for wires into the cockpit - if the luggage is lost, the equipment will remain with us.

    On a note: On AliExpress, you can buy a lot of good goods from China that will come in handy when traveling (gadgets, household items, clothes, accessories, cosmetics, and much more) at a much lower price than in Ukrainian stores.

    Clothing and footwear

    The choice of clothes and shoes on a trip should be approached with all responsibility. Travel clothes should be practical, made from wrinkle-resistant and quick-drying fabrics, comfortable and coordinated. It's best not to bring repetitive items, such as two pairs of shorts of the same length or three sundresses, just because you like them all. As practice shows, almost half of the things taken on a trip are not worn (especially in southern countries).

    I'll tell you right away our family has long made its choice in favor of outdoor clothes and shoes (for outdoor activities). This is explained by the fact that such things (specialized clothing and footwear) have a very low weight, strength and a high degree of protection of the body from adverse environmental conditions. Perfectly retain heat, remove moisture and "breathe".

    What we think is worth taking:

    • Shoes- it’s good if you have boots and sandals in your assortment. Boots will keep your feet secure on rough terrain, while sandals will give you the opportunity to take a break from heavy shoes during camping. It is better to take shoes with a membrane. It should also be remembered that this kind of shoes, whether it be sneakers or boots, should always be purchased one size or half a size larger - this is very important.
    • Socks- a good sock, you begin to appreciate it only when you know it in comparison. You can also walk in cotton socks, but there is one drawback in cotton fabric - it absorbs moisture very much and is reluctant to part with it. The question logically arises, “Why did we spend money on a membrane in a boot when the foot is wet anyway?” Therefore, use thermal socks: get wet quickly, dry quickly.
    • Storm jacket and pants(at least just a jacket) or in other words a raincoat - protects from wind and rain. An indispensable thing during long walks: sun, wind, rain - you are always protected, everything is dry and healthy.
    • Fleece jacket- the middle heating layer is indispensable without it. Fleece- This is a synthetic fabric from which the second or middle layer of clothing is made. Thermal underwear is put on under it, which collects moisture from the body, transfers it to fleece, a membrane jacket is put on top of the fleece, which brings all the moisture out.
    • thermal underwear(jacket and pants) or at least a jacket. If summer, then a t-shirt. It is also worth paying attention to specialized underwear: it weighs little, dries quickly, does not soar.
    • Transformer pants- These are universal pants that turn into shorts with a slight movement of the hand. These items are usually made of synthetic fabric, which is similar to cotton in softness, breathability and texture, but at the same time retains all the best qualities of nylon. Differ in high reliability and convenience.
    • Trekking shirts and t-shirts- stylish things, both for every day and for hiking. They are durable, UV protected, fast drying, lightweight and breathable.

    Important: trekking clothing must be washed in warm water with special products that do not dry out the membrane (film) and SUCH THINGS SHOULD NOT BE SPIN IN THE WASHING MACHINE.

    • Swimming trunks / swimsuit if you go to the sea;)

    Note: it is important to understand that such things are PERFECT for tourism and travel, as well as for everyday wear. And, girls, know - it's FASHIONABLE. Things are very stylish, you can find wonderful sundresses with skirts, and what kind of trekking hats are there - you will rock.

    And of course for lovers of full contact with nature you should have the following with you:

    1. Backpack– when traveling, this thing is always with you. From morning until evening. It should be practical, hardy, and most importantly comfortable.
    2. sleeping bag- many underestimate this thing, but in vain. Comfortable sleep allows you to restore strength for the next, unforgettable day.
    3. Tent- away from home, she will become your true friend and home at the same time. Protects you from rain, wind and midges.
    4. Rug- it can be foam or self-inflating.

    Personal Care and Cosmetics

    When it comes to personal care items and cosmetics, the list can be endless. Believe me, the minimum set is enough - new impressions from the trip, tan and sunglasses will replace all your cosmetics.

    What we think is worth taking:

    • Toothpaste and brush
    • Shaving accessories / electric shaver
    • Manicure scissors/”nippers”
    • Comb + clipper(on long trips we cut each other's hair)
    • Deodorant
    • Wet wipes + hand sanitizer(good for kids)
    • Shampoo (2 in 1) in samplers or a small tube up to 100 ml
    • Some toilet paper and paper napkins
    • Roll of disposable plastic bags- a thing for a trip is extremely useful, it will always come in handy on the road

    Additionally for girls:

    • Some cotton swabs and discs
    • Moisturizing cream
    • Eyebrow Tweezers(for example, in Sri Lanka, I was looking for such a device for half a day)
    • Decorative cosmetics if without it absolutely nothing and nowhere
    • Feminine hygiene products(in Asian countries, these are luxury items and are very expensive)
    • Pumice stone for chapped skin(especially relevant in southern countries)

    It is better to pour all liquids into special tubes of 100 ml, you can buy the so-called travel kit, which will significantly save your nerves and time at the airport.

    Remember you are allowed to carry liquids on board the aircraft (liquid means not only shampoo, but also alcohol), if the volume does not exceed 100 ml and is placed in a 20 * 20 cm bag with a zipper. And do not forget that in all corners of the world you can buy soap on the spot, scrubbing the body, shower gel and so on.

    Additionally or “must have”, which can greatly facilitate the backpack and travel life

    In addition to all of the above, we would advise you to acquire the following things:

    • Ultra light towels: perfectly absorb moisture, dry quickly and weigh little. Just a brilliant thing: bedding, sheets, bedspreads for the son and a towel for the family.

    In our family, as an example, we use these towels;)
    They put it under my son's head on a trip to Honduras;)
    • Burner- a great thing that served us well in. You can save not only on drinks, but also on food. Cook anywhere, anytime. We can recommend a Chinese-made Fire-Maple burner - it has never let me down and a worthy thing price = quality :)
    Using a Fire-Maple burner, we cooked pasta with shrimp;)
    • Travel set of dishes: cup, bowl, spoon-fork. Good for hiking and travel. Durable, lightweight, compact.

    Sea to summit dishes are our favorite;)
    • drinking system- a very convenient thing that can be placed in a backpack (many have a special compartment with a hole for a tube) and drink while walking with the whole family.

    • Knife, but rather a multifunctional set, such as Victorinox does, for example.
    • Flashlight.
    • Lighter and matches.
    • Repair kit for clothes and shoes: thread, needle, pins.
    • Impregnation for shoes: for active recreation is simply a necessary thing and you begin to understand this only when you get into bad weather. Gives water-repellent properties, retains strength and breathability.
    • Trekking poles- they are not required, but with them it is really easier for both the back and legs. Especially if you walk a lot.
    • Tape or cling film for airport backpack wrap and so on. In a word, something that can make life much easier.
    • coil of rope, especially for seaside holidays - it is more convenient to dry towels and swimwear, not all hotels have dryers.
    • Hermetic bags(an indispensable thing for all kinds of water trips), compression bags, leggings and ponchos, but I think everyone should come to these things on their own.

    Despite the seemingly impressive list of things to travel, with proper packing, all this (and even more) can easily fit into a backpack with a volume of 45 liters (for each person). You can put things in a suitcase and a backpack with rollers, so they don’t wrinkle much, and some of the things can be put into shoes and fill the voids with them.

    Life hack: We have our own organizer bag for each member of the family, where things are placed. This is especially true with children. Everyone has their own bag with their personal belongings, and to find the right T-shirt, you do not have to turn the whole suitcase over.

    What to take on a trip with a child

    If you are traveling with children, the amount of travel essentials will increase noticeably. But even here it is important not to overdo it and not take the floor of the children's closet with you, especially if you are going to warm countries. As a rule, they need one T-shirt and one set of underwear more. Of course, you need to take care of what to do with the child on the plane and on vacation, pick up clothes for all occasions, and if the child is small, solve the issue of food and so on.

    Bare butt in Nicaragua ;)

    What we think is worth taking:

    • Documentation: a photo of the child must be pasted into the parent's passport or he must have his own passport, a visa and medical insurance must be issued for him. If the child is traveling with only one parent, have permission to travel from the other parent.
    • Clothes: arrange clothes so that there is always a change if the child gets dirty or tears clothes. It is better to have light and warm jackets for emergencies.
    • first aid kit(all the same drugs as described above, plus individual medications for the child if there are chronic diseases).
    • Toys: think about what you can take your child to organize his leisure time - for example, a coloring book, a few favorite toys and new toys, a tablet with downloaded films and games.
    • I'm going(relevant for the whole family on a trip) : dried fruits, nuts, cookies, water.
    • For small children it is worth taking on a trip spare diapers, wet wipes, paper napkins, a small blanket, a light blouse (air conditioning is often on the plane, bus), sling / backpack / hipsit / cane stroller. Prepare baby food for the first time until you get comfortable in a new place and find a supermarket.

    Life hack: on a plane or bus, we always take with us a tourist ultra-light towel for a child, which replaces a blanket and a jacket. If necessary, spread, covered, wiped. Multifunctional and compact.

    And remember that the lightness of a travel bag is an important factor that will affect the positive impression of the whole trip as a whole. And in order not to worry about the size and weight of your luggage, check the information on airline baggage allowances on the Airlinesbaggage website.

    In a word, travel light, discover the world and bring souvenirs.

    What's in your luggage? What are some things you can't do without while traveling? Write in the comments!

    Life hacks from the site:

    1. Nuts, crackers, marmalades, sucking sweets, chips are great to save you from a boring road and help you “starve a worm” before a snack. On the road, we always try to keep a spare pack of such sweets in the car.
    2. A thermos of coffee should always be on hand to cheer up the driver. Our Zojirushi thermos fits perfectly in car cup holders and easily keeps the right temperature until the next overnight stay, even if it does not happen today.
    3. Emergency food supply: under the seat, we always keep an extra supply of instant mashed potatoes and noodles just in case. With our passion to get somewhere far away, it is not always possible to count on a shop or cafe in the steppe. And in general, you never know where you get up and where you decide to take a walk. It’s good if there are also a couple of chocolates under the seat, rye bread and maybe some canned food ... The main thing to remember is that this is NZ!
    4. A compact frying pan is never superfluous. Among the products in the car, we usually always have chicken eggs. I confess that for me it is a special buzz to cook scrambled eggs for Rob in the morning. And sometimes in stores you can even find a ready-made mixture for making pancakes - and this is a separate holiday!
    5. There are never too many paper napkins. I always take a lot of them. First of all, they do an excellent job of cleaning dishes from grease and are generally convenient when there is nowhere to wash them or just too lazy to go. Honestly, I do the same with our plates on a hike.
    6. Jet Boil - we often write about this wonderful device and talk a lot, and we will say it again, because we really use it everywhere: even in traffic jams, heating water right in the car.
    7. Water! 5 liters of clean drinking water should always be in the car - this is our obligatory rule after poisoning in Abkhazia. For drinking on the road, we buy cool mineral sparkling water - it invigorates well, and in parking lots we often use the stored five-liter bottle. This again contributes to our autonomy, as our snack is not tied to a stream or a store.
    8. The Leatherman multitool is what saves space in your car without making a mess. Robert does not carry an extra screwdriver, wire cutters, bottle opener or corkscrew - he always has everything at hand in this compact super multitool.

    When we are going on a trip, it is very important to take everything we need to make our vacation as comfortable as possible, but at the same time, there is no need to take too much. Therefore, it is worth thinking about what to take with you on a trip in advance. It is best if you have a list of the most necessary things in front of your eyes, which reduces the likelihood that you will forget something. Once a well-written list of things will come in handy on any trip.

    What things do we need on the trip?

    Documentation

    1. Passport and international passport if you travel abroad.
    2. Copy of passport and international passport. Be sure to make a copy of your photo page and visa page.
    3. Tickets for plane, train or bus. Make a photocopy and download tickets to your phone if you have an electronic version.
    4. Hotel voucher. Print it out, make a photocopy and download it to your phone.
    5. Medical insurance. Print it out, make a photocopy and download it to your phone. In the article, I told in detail how to choose the right insurance and shared my experience of insurance abroad.
    6. An international driver's license if you are going to rent a car or scooter while traveling.
    7. If you are going on a trip for a long time, you can issue a general power of attorney for a person you trust. For example, when I traveled around Thailand for 5 months, on the very first day of arrival, I lost my SIM card, to which my webmoney wallet was linked, in connection with this, I could not use this wallet and I had to create a new one, so that at least get money somehow. And if I had issued a general power of attorney for a person who was in my city, then he would have made me a new card with the same number and thus I would have solved my problem. Therefore, in order to solve problems in your city, it is very useful to have a trusted person.

    Money

    1. Cash. I don't recommend carrying a large amount of cash, but it's best to always have a small amount of cash dollars in your pocket just in case.
    2. Bank cards (Visa and MasterCard). It is advisable to have several cards of different banks with you. Be sure to check the expiration date of the cards and, if it comes to an end, then make a new card. Write down all the pincodes in a safe place, just do not sign that this is a pincode from a particular card, just rewrite the numbers and make a special designation for yourself so that it is clear that this is a pincode from a particular card. For example, you can write out numbers and shade different pincodes with different colors using a marker, in case your cards differ in color.

    Technique

    1. Mobile phone and charger, connect roaming. I recommend taking two mobile phones - for a roaming SIM card and a local card. Or one phone, if two SIM cards can be inserted into it.
    2. Laptop, netbook or tablet plus charger, headphones, mouse, microphone.
    3. Camera and/or video camera, charger and cable.
    4. Flash drive

    first aid kit

    What medicines to take on a trip I told in detail. Also, do not forget to take travel insurance with you on your trip, it will allow you to save a large amount of money in case of need.

    Clothing and footwear

    Everything is individual here, someone takes very few things, it can be a couple of T-shirts, shorts and flip flops, and someone cannot do without a lot of clothes.

    What advice can I give about clothes and shoes? If you are going to Southeast Asia, in addition to summer clothes, take a couple of warm clothes: a jacket, pants, socks and sneakers. Because in the evening it can be cool here, especially if you like to ride a bike in the evening or at night. Also, if you plan to travel by bus, as a rule, it is quite cool in them because of the air conditioners, so you will need a jacket, pants, socks, and sneakers. Sneakers are also very useful in those cases when you decide to take a walk in the jungle.

    I can say that these five items that I talked about above: documents, money, equipment, first aid kit, clothes and shoes, these are the most basic things that you definitely need to take on a trip. Below I will talk about a few more points, but here, if you wish, you can take these things with you or buy on the spot.

    protective equipment

    1. Suntan cream
    2. Sunglasses
    3. Insect repellent
    4. Hygienic lipstick
    5. Cap, hat or panama
    6. Umbrella

    Hygiene and personal care products

    1. Deodorant
    2. Comb, hair dryer
    3. Cotton and dry wipes
    4. Manicure set
    5. Shaving accessories
    6. Cotton swabs and discs
    7. Soap or shower gel
    8. Shampoo and hair balm (travel version is best or poured into small bottles)

    Other

    1. Needle and thread
    2. Pin
    3. Small folding knife

    Here, in principle, and all the necessary things that I wanted to talk about. If you are going on a long trip, then I recommend not to take a lot of things, it is best if you go with one backpack, especially for those who want to visit several countries, as it is quite inconvenient to carry a suitcase with you all the time. Moreover, if you travel around one region and use, for example, a low-cost airline, it is much cheaper to fly without a suitcase, since you will have to constantly pay extra for it and a rather high cost.

    You can download a detailed travel checklist here. When you are going on a trip, print it out and check whether you have taken all the necessary things. Take a list with things on your trip, it will help you not to forget anything on the way back.
